About US
Welcome to Helja, a family-owned business founded by Villi and Dana in the summer of 2023. Our journey began when we met in Akureyri in 2018 and later moved to England before eventually returning to our roots in Iceland. With two sons and a daughter, we embarked on a new adventure by renting the picturesque farm Oddspartur in Þykkvibær.
The old barn on the farm has been lovingly renovated into a charming restaurant, offering guests a cozy and inviting space to enjoy delicious meals and create lasting memories. In the autumn of 2023, we expanded our offerings by introducing two glamping domes, available for rent on Airbnb. The unique experience of staying in these domes quickly gained popularity, leading us to further invest in our business.
Driven by our commitment to sustainability, we prioritize recycling and reusing materials in all aspects of our operations. This core value is reflected in every decision we make, ensuring that we minimize our environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future. In the summer of 2024, we were able to finance the entire farm and added three more glamping domes, providing even more guests with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature.
At Helja, we strive to create a welcoming and eco-conscious environment where guests can unwind, connect with nature, and experience the beauty of Iceland in a unique and unforgettable way. Join us on this journey as we continue to grow and evolve, all while staying true to our values and commitment to sustainability.

At The Barn Kitchen, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and preserving the natural beauty of our surroundings. Here are some of the ways we strive to be environmentally sustainable:
Energy-efficient practices
We use a heat pump to save electricity and reduce our energy consumption, ensuring that our operations are as eco-friendly as possible.
Locally sourced ingredients
We support local farmers and producers by sourcing the freshest and highest quality ingredients from the region. By choosing local, we reduce food miles and support the local economy.
Homegrown herbs and vegetables
We cultivate our own herbs and vegetables on-site, ensuring that our dishes are infused with the freshest flavors while promoting sustainability through homegrown produce.
Waste management
We compost all organic waste generated in our kitchen, minimizing our impact on the environment and turning waste into valuable resources for our farm.
Eco-friendly transportation
Our commitment to sustainability extends to our transportation practices. We drive electric cars to reduce emissions and promote cleaner air in our community.
Recycling initiatives
We take recycling seriously at The Barn Kitchen, ensuring that all recyclable materials are properly sorted and recycled to minimize waste and promote a circular economy.
